Finding Your Photographer

5 Things to Look For In Your Relationship with Your Wedding Photographer

If you are newly engaged or just dreaming about what your wedding will be like someday, you are probably starting to think about the kind of wedding photographer you want to hire for your big day. There are a multitude of different things to consider when you start considering who to hire to photograph your big day. Among which some might not consider their relational connection with a potential photographer.

This is a very important factor in hiring a photographer for your wedding day! Yes, you should love the art that the photographer produces however, your connection and comfortability with your photog is incredibly important. Here is a list of 5 different things you should look for in your potential wedding photographer.

  1. Relaxed and Easy-going Connection

    1. It is so important to find a photographer that you truly connect with. Someone who feels easy to talk to and inquires about you and your fiance. This person is going to spend A LOT of time with you on the most special day of your life - make sure it is someone that feels comfortable for you and your fiance to spend time with!

  2. Clear Posing Direction

    1. If photoshoots make you and your fiance feel uncomfortable (that is a lot of us!) then you need a photographer who can give clear directions. We don’t all know exactly how to pose for photos or what poses are flattering - that is what your photographer is trained to do! Make sure that they are able to give you good, clear direction - posing confusion tends to lead to nervousness and you want to feel as relaxed as possible.

  3. Fun AND Organized

    1. Your photographer should, hopefully, represent the best of both worlds! Fun and organized! There are plenty of really fun photographers out there but not only should they help you enjoy your session, but they absolutely still need to be organized. Trusting that your photographer has their shit together, knows your wedding timeline, and can have fun while doing what they came there to do is very important!

  4. Encouraging and Uplifting

    1. Sometimes compliments can make people feel uncomfortable, which is totally understandable. However, during a photo session, if is helpful to get feedback on how you are doing and how the photos are looking. Have you ever had a silent photographer? They give some direction but don’t encourage and hype you up at all? No fun! Your photographer should be part of your hype squad!

  5. Partner Feels Comfortable with Photographer

    1. So often we run into couples where one of them is comfortable or open to photoshoots but the other would rather run in the opposite direction of a camera. We totally understand how having your photo taken can feel awkward. That is why it is essential to find a photographer who helps your fiance feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera. The more relaxed your fiance feels in front of the camera, the more authentic your photos will be.

Keep these 5 things in mind when you start to talk to potential photographers! You can ask them questions about how they guide you during photoshoots. You can make sure your fiance is available for a conversation with them before booking to see how you all connect together. Put in the hard work to find someone who has the photo style you are looking for but who also really connects with you as a couple and as individuals.
