North Shore, Oahu

Rumor has it that today offered the biggest swell in years on Oahu’s North Shore today! Lucky me! This meant grabbing the camera with the largest telephoto lens I have (70mm - 200mm). Measurements reported were 45ft wave heights. I had no idea of the impact waves like this would make.

A drive that would normally take me 50 minutes from where I’m currently staying on the island took 3 hours due to the massive crowds and one lane roads going in and out of this part of the island. I really didn’t mind the traffic when the breeze coming off the ocean is so refreshing not to mention the soundtrack of the waves crashing on shore. It’s the first time I’ve really sat in traffic on the island and I couldn’t help but notice that no one really seemed to mind. Most cars passing were filled with people with huge smiles. I don’t think I heard one car honk their horn.

When I arrived to one of the nearby beaches, I instantly found my spot (trying to be mindful of the people around me and to not block their view). I only spent about 45 minutes here so see what I got below and enjoy!

A few things I noticed on this adventure today are:
- Traffic jams are more like a community events and has this vibe of “where all in this together” rather than flipping people off and screaming at each other (fucking Chicago… get it together).
- People just seem to be more in love with life here. I saw so many people kissing in their cars, couples on mopeds and riding bikes together. I saw so many faces today with PURE joy on them. The park was filled with people engaging with one another, playing sports, and seemed very community focused.
- Tattoos are a thing here. Everyone seems to not only have a tattoo but be covered. I can’t wait to get more :)
- Girls/Women wear thong style bikinis bottoms. Hey Midwest… Stop being so prude.
- When driving along the coast and there are large waves, it’s not uncommon for the waves to jump up onto the road! That shocked me and so glad it didn’t cause an accident! Just something to note.
- All of these photos were taken within the same 45 minute timeframe and from the same location. Wild how quickly and how different the ocean looks / adjusts.
