Clothing Guidelines

Planning / booking a session for your family, you and your spouse, or just for yourself can be a stressful process for some, maybe even most. Our team is here to make the entire process easier and more FUN! That is why we want to help take some stress off of one part : Attire.

What you wear for a shoot can differ depending on the kind of photo  session you have booked. Obviously, you won’t wear the same thing for your boudoir shoot with Cassie as you might wear to your engagement shoot with Marcy or Jackie…so let’s break this down a bit further!

There are a few general guidelines we like to give to our clients regardless of the kind of shoot you are going to be attending. These guidelines are applicable in many different scenarios and can be adjusted to different style preferences as well!

General Guidelines

  • Neutrals, pastels, and earth tones

    1. Wearing neutrals in almost any scenario lends itself well to beautiful and simple photos. They don't distract or pull focus away from your faces (which is what we care about most!). They can also be worn with any backdrop…trees, buildings, sky, flowers, mountains, water, you name it - neutrals are a safe bet. For neutral colors we recommend : tan, white, cream, soft/faded/washed colors (ex: blue, yellow, olive), gray, and black. If you love fun pops of color, neutrals are great for highlighting those! Try some washed jeans and a cream blouse with red heels for a fun pop! You can get creative and make it work for you!

  • Clothing that shows MOVEMENT!

    1. This might be a new idea to you - that is okay! For a long time it was fashionable to wear tight/fitted clothing for photos to highlight your body. While there are numerous different photography styles, most are moving in a movement oriented direction. When we say to wear something that lends itself well to movement we are talking about : dresses that flow in the wind or when you walk, shirts that hang and are comfortable but flattering, flowy skirts, etc. Some of the most beautiful photos are captured when movement is happening. When the wind comes and blows your dress or skirt in a magical way or when you can prance through a field of flowers because your clothes give you the space to do so. Keep comfort AND style in mind! We want you to feel comfortable at your shoot so you can have fun with it.

  • Outfits that compliment each other

    1. Whether you are doing an engagement/couples shoot or a family session, make sure you think about what others will be wearing. This does not mean they have to match perfectly (in fact, we do not recommend matchy-matchy). This is another great thing about wearing neutrals! If everyone in your family is wearing a soft/worn tan, cream, white or neutral, you won't clash against each other in the photos. Instead, you will come together in a very beautiful way showing cohesion and the focus will be on your faces and smiles instead of your clothes.

  • Solid colors

    1. This is self-explanatory but loud prints and patterns are very distracting in photos. Whether you choose a neutral or another color to compliment a neutral, we recommend a solid print. You can have fun with different textures to add to your photos but we recommend staying away from loud prints and colors.

  • Clothes that feel like YOU on your best day!

    1. Above all, we want you to feel like you. We want you to feel comfortable AND beautiful. Think of your session as a time to show up as you on your best day! What would you wear and how does that lend itself to photographs? Make subtle adjustments and then wear whatever you have chosen with all the confidence in the world!!

I hope these guidelines are helpful and inspiring! Hopefully they help you get excited about your upcoming session and take some of the pressure off of planning. Stay tuned to a Session-Specific Attire breakdown!
